A Place to Relax and Read

Libraries' Popularity Rises as Economy Sinks

Article:Herald Net: Everett, Washington Published: February 5, 2009 - In a tight economy, more people are cutting back entertainment costs by checking out books and DVDs and turning to their public libraries for old fashioned help and services. Washington State Library recently surveyed library use in six categories at more than half of the state's public library systems. It found an 11 percent jump in checkouts over a six-month period, compared with the same period in the previous year. There was an increase in the number of people who used library computers to search the internet and the amount of time people spent using those computers..Libraries nationally are seeing a surge in activity, even in areas that have dipped in recent years as more people used search engines like Google, and they're pointing to the deepening recession as a reason for the uptick...

Several computers for public use

When people think of a library, they sometimes think of a particular structure or room from their past. More often people will think of a librarian who worked there. A circulation desk where they were greeted. A story time where they learned the magic of reading. A book that was recommended by that helpful person behind the desk. A library seems like a building, but it is actually a process, and a main feature of that process is that the library's staff is there to help.

"What Is A Book"

"A book is pages, pictures and words. A book is animals, people and birds. A book is stories of queens and kings, poems and songs - so many things! Curled in a corner where I can hide. With a book I can journey far and wide. Though it's only paper from end to end, A book is a very special friend." by Lora Duneta
